The Certain Gospel: A Knock on the Door | Luke 2:1-21

Last year Monica and I traveled to my hometown of Estes Park Colorado for the Holidays. It’s known for being the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. A lot of people visit there in the summer, but only about 10,000 live there year-round. Many who grow up there leave when they graduate high school. Estes doesn’t have corporate jobs. It doesn’t have a great school district. It has lots of elk and lots of tourists, nothing special ever seems to…

The Certain Gospel: Grace for Doubters | Luke 1:5-80

Have you ever noticed how two people can respond differently to the same news? “Look, free puppies!” Great news for kids. Bad news for parents. “Mom and dad, I got into my first choice of college, the expensive private one!” Great news for their child. Bad news for their bank account. “The verdict is… not guilty.” Great news for the defendant. Bad news for the plaintiff. In Luke chapter one, we read how two different people respond to similar news.…

Christmas Rescue in Exodus | Exodus 2:1-10

Have you ever had something stolen? When I was a kid, I always went to bed on Christmas Eve wondering if robbers would steal all of my Christmas gifts during the night. They never did, but whenever I heard a story on the news that something like that had happened, I was convinced our house was next. I just heard a story out of St. George Utah about three teenagers who tried to steal a a laser light show out…

The God-Man Foretold | Isaiah 7:14

In Isaiah 7:14, the prophet Isaiah tells King Ahaz to trust in God even as he is surrounded by enemies that wan’t to destroy Judah and his kingdom. Isaiah tells King Aha to ask God for a sign, but Ahaz refuses. Instead, Isaiah gives him a different sign, the sign of the Messiah, of long-term hope. The sign of the Messiah comes in two parts, a miraculous virgin birth, and in his name, Immanuel, which means “God with us.” The…

The King Foretold | Numbers 24:17

In Numbers 24:17, Balam prophecies to the king of Moab that “in the latter days” (v. 14), a king will come who will fight against the enemies of God. Balam gives two signs, that of the star, and that of the scepter. In his third oracle, in Numbers 24:9, Balam links the scepter with the sign of the lion. These two signs, that of the star and the lion, tell us Jesus is a king who both brings hope and…

Jesus is King | Matthew 2:1-12

The story of the magi in Matthew 2:1-12 teaches us three different ways to respond to the message of Jesus. We can respond as religious people who don’t need Jesus (chief priests), as non-religious people who don’t like Jesus (Herod), or as gospel people who recognize Jesus is king and worship him (magi). Worship king Jesus this Christmas season. You can listen to the audio or download the sermon outline above (Save PDF). The sermon slides are below and you can…

Jesus is God | Matthew 1:18-25

The author Matthew wrote the Gospel of Matthew to early Jewish Christians. Some of them were likely asking, “Can I as a Jew become a Christian?” Matthew tells us that is doesn’t matter if you’re religious or non-religious, anyone can come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Jesus came to change lives. He turned Mary and Joseph’s world upside-down and wants to do the same with yours. Jesus is the God who came to change our lives with…
